You have probably heard the expression "Ay Bendito" and you want some examples of how you can use this expression. “Ay Bendito” literally translates to “Oh Blessed” . When you say “Ay Bendito” you can think of it as a frustration expression like “ Oh gosh” or “Oh man”. On the other hand, depending on the situation or the voice tone it is being used it will mean or sound like an empathy expression like “ Poor thing” or “Blessed the Lord”.
Here I will give you some examples of how we use this expression in Puerto Rico. This expression can be used as a way to express frustration or sympathy for something.
Lets begin with 5 examples of frustration:
¡Ay bendito , aquí viene Carlos otra vez!- Oh gosh, here come Carlos again!
¡Ay bendito , yo no quiero hacer eso otra vez hoy! - Oh man, I don’t want to do that again today!
¡Ay bendito, yo no quería ir para allá! - Oh gosh, I didn’t want to go there!
¡Ay bendito, esta comida está fría! - Oh man, this food is cold!
¿Yo tengo que hacer eso otra vez? ¡ Ay bendito! - Do I have to do that again? Oh man!
Five examples of empathy.
Ay bendito, él no ha comido en todo el día - Poor thing, he hasn't eaten all day
Ay bendito, ¿qué te pasó? - Oh man, what happened to you?
Ay bendito, se cayó - Poor thing, he fell.
Está asustado, ay bendito- He 's scared, poor thing.
Ay bendito, me siento tan mal por el- Poor thing, I feel so bad for him.
Sometimes it might be difficult to distinguish between somebody expressing empathy or frustration. Basically you have to recognize that by the tone of their voice or the facial expressions.
