20 Easy ways to Greet in Spanish

Greeting people is the first step to start a good conversation in Spanish


It takes practice to sound natural when greeting in Spanish and that's why you should practice this a lot. Once you greet somebody in a relaxed and comfortable way, there are more possibilities of carrying out a great Spanish conversation.


Begin with this 20 Phrases that will help you a lot:

  1. Hola- Hi

  2. Hola, ¿cómo estás?- Hi, how are you? (informal)

  3. Hola, ¿cómo está? - Hi, how are you? (formal) You use the formal form to talk to people older than you, to authority figures, with people that you are just meeting, etc. Basically if you want to sound respectful you say this one.

  4. Hola, cómo están? - Hi, how are you all? (informal plural)

  5. Buenos días- Good morning

  6. Buenas tardes- Good afternoon

  7. Buenas noches- Good evening (when arriving somewhere)

  8. Que tengas buenas noches- Have a good night (when leaving a place)

  9. Que tengan buenas noches- Have a good night

  10. ¿Qué tal?- What's up?

  11. ¿Qué hay? - What's up?

  12. ¿Qué está pasando?- What's going on?

  13. ¿Qué pasa?- ¿What happens?

  14. ¿Qué es la que hay?- What's up? Puertorrican expression

  15. ¿Qué es la que?- What's up? Puertorrican expression

  16. ¿Qué lo qué?- What's up? Dominican expression

  17. Qué hubo?- What happened

  18. ¿Cómo te va?- How 's it going?

  19. ¿Cómo les va?- How's it going (plural)
